A central responsibility is updating North Macedonia’s Manual for Translation of EU Acquis, turning it into a quality assurance framework for legal-linguistic review and ensuring translated laws preserve the legal meaning and effect of the original EU acts.
The role also includes reviewing translated acquis-related legislation for legal and linguistic accuracy, correcting translation, grammar, syntax, and terminology errors, verifying consistency with source texts, and maintaining review records and documenting identified issues.
In addition, the specialist will help design coordination models for translation, revision, and terminology management across institutions involved in the EU integration process, with the aim of applying legal-linguistic standards consistently across the acquis preparation workflow.
UNOPS also expects the successful candidate to lead at least two advanced training sessions and one workshop for translators and legal professionals, while creating guides and case studies that highlight common legal translation challenges and their solutions.
Applicants are required to hold an advanced degree in Law, Linguistics, Translation Studies, or a related field, alongside at least five years of relevant experience, although candidates with a first-level university degree and seven years of experience may also be considered.
Experience related to EU acquis translation, multilingual legislative texts, and legal-linguistic revision is considered an asset. Fluency in both Macedonian and English is required.
The specialist role is offered on a retainer basis for up to 12 months, with applications closing on May 18, 2026.
