Microsoft Live Interpreter API Now in Public Preview

On September 12, 2025, Microsoft announced the Live Interpreter API in public preview, expanding its Azure AI Speech portfolio.

The new service enables real-time speech-to-speech translation across 76 input languages and 143 locales, with automatic language detection that eliminates the need to pre-select an input language. Live Interpreter can also follow speakers as they switch languages mid-conversation.

Beyond automated and continuous language identification, Microsoft says the service provides “human-interpreter level latency.”

Microsoft says another key feature is personal voice preservation, which allows translated audio to sound like the original speaker, maintaining identity and presence across languages.

Delivered as a fully managed service within Azure AI Foundry, it allows developers to stream live audio and receive near-instant translated output without the need to manually stitch together multiple components.

Developers can begin experimenting with it using Microsoft’s QuickStart guide. However, as a preview release, it carries no production service level agreement, so enterprises will need to test performance carefully before moving to full deployment.

Microsoft sees the Live Interpreter API being deployed across a range of scenarios:

  • Online meetings and events — enabling real-time interpretation across languages, to reduce friction and improve inclusivity for global teams. Microsoft has already piloted interpreter‑style agents inside Teams, and Live Interpreter appears to be the logical extension to provide the same capability as a standalone API for third‑party applications.
  • Customer service and support — offering multilingual call handling, improving customer experience.
  • Education and training — enabling lecturers and trainers to reach students in their own language while preserving tone and rhythm, improving comprehension.
  • Social commerce live streaming — allowing creators to reach global audiences with translations that keep their voice style, helping preserve brand personality and audience engagement across markets.

“Live Interpreter helps people communicate clearly and inclusively in everyday scenarios, like in Teams meetings, customer support centers, international classrooms, or global events,” Microsoft wrote in the announcement.

This omits, among many other things, healthcare interpreting. A large market for Language Solutions Integrators, especially in the United States.

As a real-world example, Anker Innovations is showcasing how the technology can be deployed in consumer devices.

“We’re excited to partner with Microsoft and to demonstrate what’s possible when AI meets every day tech. Built on the Azure Speech Translation Live Interpreter capability, we’re able to deliver smarter, more intuitive, and truly immersive audiovisual experiences for users around the world,” Anker Innovations said.
