As a member of the Directorate’s core management team, the Head of Unit will be responsible for coordinating and managing the workload across the Directorate’s ten units and 24 language sectors.
The role includes ensuring sound administrative coordination, the efficient use of resources, and the quality and continuity of translation services provided by the Directorate. The successful candidate will manage a team of administrators and assistants within the Translation Management Unit.
The position also involves acting as the Directorate’s business representative for IT and technology-related projects, contributing to inter-institutional cooperation, and representing the Directorate in committees and at inter-institutional level where required.
Candidates must demonstrate managerial experience, strong organizational and communication skills, and knowledge of at least two official EU languages.
Experience in translation management and familiarity with translation technology tools and systems — including neural machine translation and large language models — are considered assets.
The selection process consists of an eligibility assessment followed by interviews with a selection panel. Up to three candidates may be shortlisted and proposed to the Secretary-General, who will make the final appointment decision.
Further details on eligibility criteria and the application procedure are available on the Committee of the Regions’ website.
The vacancy follows recent senior language services recruitment processes at other EU institutions, including Director-level posts at the Council of the European Union and leadership changes at the European Commission’s Translation Centre.
Unlike those Director-level appointments, this position is a Head of Unit role within a central coordination service, focused on operational management across the Directorate rather than overall institutional leadership.
