AirPods Live Translation Blocked for EU Users With EU Apple Accounts

Just days after Apple’s September 9, 2025, product launch event, in which the company launched its new AirPods Pro 3 with live AI translation, users in the European Union (EU) have learned that the feature “is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU.”

Apple’s feature availability webpage presents the information without offering a reason for the restriction, but since the company has been fined twice already by the European Commission (EC) within a little over a year, a reasonable explanation could be the EU’s regulations on AI, antitrust practices, and data privacy.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the EU AI Act all impose stringent requirements on how AI services like live translation are offered, including mandates on data privacy, user consent, consumer choice, and data flows.

The announcement has fueled speculation on social media, with some, like Christian Calgie, lamenting on X that the regulations are keeping the feature from being available in “The EU… the place in the world possibly most useful to have that feature.” User Daniel Castro commented on the platform that this is “A perfect example of the unintended consequences of the DMA.”

Other reactions point to a tactical choice made by Apple in relation to the massive fines imposed on the company by the EU, to highlight what it sees as regulatory overreach by the EU and prevent more costly penalties.

The restrictions underscore a growing trend where tech companies must navigate a fragmented array of legal and language-specific requirements, affecting not just live translation, but also a host of other Apple Intelligence features and services.
