The European Union announced last week the July 15, 2022 deadline for freelance interpreters to apply for a seat at an accreditation testing event in October 2022. Freelance interpreters who meet all requirements are invited to take the test. Successful examinees then become eligible for work next to staff interpreters at the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the Court of Justice of the European Union, which share the same interpreter-recruiting program.
Although nationality is not a consideration, candidates must have language combinations represented in any of the 24 language profiles. They should also hold a minimum four-year BA in Conference Interpretation or an MA in Conference Interpretation. A BA in any discipline with a minimum one-year graduate diploma in Conference Interpretation is also acceptable.
Candidates must also prove professional experience of at least one year as conference interpreter at a level accepted for international meetings, and declare only one native, or “A” language, even if they have more than one. Skills tested are consecutive and simultaneous interpreting from second or third (“passive”) languages into native (“active”) languages.
