Acrolinx Rebrands as Markup AI, Secures USD 27.5m in Financing

Acrolinx, a Language Technology Platform (LTP) that provides AI-powered content governance, has announced that it has rebranded as Markup AI, and has raised USD 27.5m to launch “the industry’s first Content Guardian AgentsSM”.

Commenting on the decision behind the rebrand, Matt Blumberg, CEO at Markup AI, told Slator, “AI is driving change across the board, and we needed to evolve with it. Think of this as more of a restart than a rebrand. With it, we have launched a completely new AI-native platform alongside a new team, a new location, and a new brand.”

“We still carry the years of linguistic engineering experience that we developed as Acrolinx, the gold standard for enterprise content compliance, but are now offering a more powerful AI solution built to address the evolving needs of the modern enterprise,” he added.

Markup AI is used by enterprises to improve the quality, readability, accuracy, and relevance of their written content. With the launch of Content Guardian Agents, the company enables multiple AI agents to scan, score, and rewrite content against brand, terminology, compliance, and industry standards, using customizable criteria.

Blumberg confirmed to Slator that Content Guardian Agents will initially support content for US, UK, and Canadian English, but expanding to additional languages is a “top priority” for the company.

Blumberg stated: “Currently, our customers — like most enterprises — draft their multilingual content in English first and then translate it to multiple languages for localization. Companies rarely create source content in multiple languages. This means it’s pivotal for businesses to ensure that source content is at the highest quality possible when it comes to clarity, readability, consistency, and that it’s using the right terminology.”

“When the source content meets these goals, the cost of translation is drastically reduced. Furthermore, when source content is high quality, the cost of fixing issues after they are translated is greatly reduced, saving businesses often millions of dollars. […] Some people will say “translation is dead” because of AI, but this is not the case. As more content is generated faster, it means we need more tools in place to make sure we’re creating high-quality translated content while respecting everything from local customs to regulatory standards,” he concluded.

New Financing & Growth Opportunities

Markup AI also announced USD 27.5m financing, which was structured as a Series A, combining both equity and debt.

The round was led by existing backers Genui Partners (majority stake since 2017) and EMH Partners (minority stake since 2022), with additional participation from long-time investor and board member, Bernd-Michael Rumpf. New investors include Capital Factory and a group of seven angel investors.

Blumberg told Slator that investors “immediately understood the use case and potential growth that the company could achieve” in a world where “87% of content marketers already use AI, but most of the tools they rely on only check for spelling, grammar, or readability. They’re often deployed without guardrails and can’t support publishing content at scale.”

He added that “these organizations have integrated AI into their marketing processes, only to realize that the accelerated content development created by AI is also creating massive risk. Content is now being written and published faster than it can be checked for quality, consistency, compliance, and other essential standards.”

Commenting on future growth opportunities in the industry, Blumberg told Slator, “There are two drivers we see enabling our growth. First, companies will continue to generate more content, and as companies continue to adopt large language models, we expect the pace and volume of content creation will continue to increase. Separately, as AI takes an increasing share of the content produced globally, the importance of a Content Guardian Agent increases. Both trends will fuel opportunities for Markup AI.”

The company said that the USD 27.5m investment will “accelerate product development, expand developer integrations, and scale go-to-market efforts globally,” as it plans to bring new Content Guardian Agents to market. These include a Brand Guardian Agent and a Policy Guardian Agent, followed by specialized agents for Accuracy, Regulatory, Privacy, and more.

Markup AI services companies across technology, healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing, with over 75 companies reportedly signing up to the Content Guardian Agents early access program, including Amazon, Adobe, and ServiceNow.
